Transfer: Miami's Thearon Collier Heading to Cali; Waiting on Admission to USC

Wrote about the rumors last week.  Here's the latest update from ESPN:

Former Miami receiver Thearon Collier is talking to USC about possibly transferring there, but he hasn't been admitted yet, a source said. Collier had met with Miami's staff earlier this month about his future with the team, as he was dealing with some personal issues. He was released from his scholarship at the beginning of the month. 

Collier bid farewell to Miami on his Facebook page on Monday with a post that read: THS MY LAST WEEK IN MIA B4 I HEAD OFF TO CALI TO PERSUIT MY FOOTBALL CAREER ... 

Word is he's going to have trouble qualifying for SC.  Chances are he'll end up at a JC to get his units/grades in check before enrolling at SC.

That's the word from last week.  Thearon was rumored to have been kicked off the team along with Steven Wesley but the local beat writers are dispelling that talk. He reportedly met with Randy Shannon earlier in the week to talk about his future and that's when the SC rumors came up.

My guess is, Thearon, who grew up in Miami with the bad crowd and also has gone through a rough year with his mom suffering a stroke and losing his son to a miscarriage earlier in the year is looking for an out and fresh start.

If the rumors end up being true, it'll be interesting to see if the NCAA sees this as a "hardship" case and waives the 1-year transfer rule.  Thearon could come in and immediately contribute on special teams as a kick/punt return man.

Rumor: Marc Tyler Transferring to Cincinnati

That's the word going around.  Would fall in line with Vidal Hazelton's previous tweets about there being more transfers in addition to Brandon Carswell.

Transfer: Travon Patterson Headed to Colorado

Yet another player bailing for more playing time elsewhere.  Can't blame Travon, he's a good kid that waited patiently but never got his chance.  Hope he does big things at Colorado.

Transfer: Brandon Carswell Heading to Cincinnati on Tuesday

In case you didn't believe Vidal Hazelton in the previous transfer post regarding Brandon, here's the official word straight from Brandon's Twitter account:

"Leaving to Cincinnati on Tues. It's going to be new but fun I can't wait"

Can lay that one to rest.

Transfer: Brandon Carswell Officially Heading to Cincinnati

According to Vidal Hazelton:

"Good news for Bearcat fans one of my surprises was my Boy Carswell is transferring to Cincy.. Still got more good news coming just waiting."

This is one of those rare transfer situations where it's a win-win for all; Brandon gets a real shot at some PT at Cincy and it frees up a scholarship for SC which can be used for highly-needed position at OL, DL, or LB.

Wish nothing but the best for Brandon.

Byron Moore Jr. Decides to Leave USC; Headed to L.A. Harbor College

Another day, another player lost.  It was announced today that Byron left the program and enrolled at L.A. Harbor college.  It's not clear why he left the program but usually situations like this involve either 1) academics or 2) personal issues; if Byron didn't like the coaches or SC he would have transferred to another school.

I wish Byron the best.  I always thought he was a kid that could flourish at SC given a few breaks.  He had a nice feel for the game and I thought he'd eventually settle down as a Free Safety.

In terms of where it leaves us, Byron's departure really doesn't impact the team next season since Jawanza Starling was the clear starter at FS.  From a depth standpoint, the loss will likely be offset by Patrick Hall who the coaches are starting off at RB but I'm also certain will end up elsewhere (personally I think he's best suited for FS).

Transfer: Malik Jackson Transferring to Tennessee

The rumors posted last week were confirmed yesterday; Malik has decided to take advantage of the transfer-without-penalty (aka roster rape) rule dictated by the NCAA to move to Tennessee.

Although Malik didn't single out any specific reason for his decision, one has to believe playing time likely was the biggest factor; Malik saw his PT drop last year when Nick Perry emerged to become a freshman AA. That trend was likely to continue this season.

The DE spot is now razor thin with Nick on one side and Armond and Wes Horton on the other. It's likely that the coaching staff moves someone like Kevin Greene or Devon Kennard back to DE to help bring depth.
